When Is Salalah's Khareef? And How to Plan It from Saudi Arabia

Short answer: Salalah's khareef runs roughly from late June to early September, and it is the only time the Arabian Peninsula offers green mountains, mist and waterfalls in summer. For a Saudi family that means a nearby summer holiday with gentle weather, no language barrier, and we confirm the entry requirements for your nationality before booking.

Why does Salalah turn green at the height of summer?

The cause is the monsoon wind that carries Indian Ocean moisture onto the Dhofar mountains, wrapping them in cloud and drizzle for weeks, so the wadis turn green and the seasonal springs run. The result looks nothing like the rest of the Gulf, with far milder temperatures than the interior.

Where to go in Salalah during the khareef?

East of Salalah: Wadi Darbat, Ayn Athum, Tawi Atair and the Jabal Samhan viewpoints. West: Mughsail beach with its blowholes and the mountain road towards Dhalkut. In town: Al Haffa souq, the Land of Frankincense and the corniche. Two days for east and west plus one for the city and beaches is a balanced split.

Fly or drive from Saudi Arabia?

Flying is quicker and direct; driving suits those who enjoy the road and want flexibility in Salalah. Either way we recommend renting a car there because the sights are spread out.

What should you book early?

Book accommodation early: the season is short and demand from across the Gulf is high, so good hotels and serviced apartments fill before it starts. Send us your dates and party size on WhatsApp and we will arrange the stay and programme.
