The International Driving Licence: What to Know Before Renting a Car Abroad

The international driving permit accompanies your Saudi licence, presenting it in multiple languages to traffic authorities and rental companies abroad. It doesn't replace your original licence, and the golden rule is to carry both whenever you drive outside the Kingdom.

When do you actually need the international permit?

You'll almost certainly need it in Europe, Japan, the US and Australia, and many rental desks ask for it even where it isn't legally required. Without it, a prepaid booking can still end with the car refused at the counter.

What are the requirements?

The basics are simple: a valid Saudi licence (citizen or resident), age 18+, and licence validity covering the permit's term. Documents: both sides of your licence, national ID or iqama, a passport copy and two white-background photos.

What should you watch out for before travelling?

Three things to watch: the permit is not valid for driving inside Saudi Arabia itself, acceptance varies by country, and rental firms may add their own conditions such as minimum age or a credit card in the driver's name.

How do we issue it over WhatsApp?

Cloud Traveler issues it through a simple WhatsApp flow: send your documents, we review and file the application, and hand you the permit ready before you fly. Ask us any time.
